On the west. from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier there is the Saxon Garden, which is part of a large palace, garden and urban complex – Saxon Axis composed in the 1713-45 on the initiative of King August II of Saxony. The Saska axis was five-sided and was located between ul. Królewska and Saski Squares (ob. Piłsudski) and the Iron Gate. At the ends of the Saxon Axis there were: Saski Palace and Mirów barracks. The Saxon Garden was planned according to French patterns as geometric. The main avenue and a series of side alleys departing from it were marked out. Architectural elements and sculptures on pedestals were placed in the garden (partially preserved). W XIX w. it was converted into an English park, architectural elements were also demolished. At that time, a water reservoir in the shape resembling the temple in Tivoli and a swimming pool with a fountain were built.. Currently, the Saxon Garden, having a much smaller area than the original one, performs the function of an urban green space. W 1965 r. a monument to Maria Konopnicka was erected there (proj. Stanisław Kulon), a w 1981 r. Monument to Stefan Starzyński (proj. Ludwika Nitschowa).
