On the right side of ul. Świętojańska there are two churches. The first is the archcathedral of. st. John the Baptist, the oldest church in Warsaw, mentioned in 1339 r. as a parish, at the beginning. XV w. elevated to the rank of a collegiate church, from 1797 r. cathedral, from 1818 r. archcathedral, from 1960 r. having the title of minor basilica. The cathedral was rebuilt many times, rebuilt, as well as regothised. This church was commemorated in the history of the city and the country with many important events. W 1339 r. a trial took place here between the Teutonic Knights and King Casimir the Great over the disputed lands. Polish rulers were crowned here: Cecylia Renata (the first wife of King Władysław IV) – w 1637 r., Eleonora Maria Józefa (the wife of King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki) – w 1670 r., King Stanisław Leszczyński and his wife Katarzyna, née Opalińska (w 1704 r.) and Stanisław August Poniatowski (w 1764 r.). In years 1588-1612 the famous "Sejm Sermons" were delivered by Piotr Skarga. W 1791 r. the Constitution was sworn in 3 house. At the end of August 1944 r. there were extremely fierce battles between the insurgents and the Nazi troops. In years 1979, 1983, 1987 i 1991 the temple was visited by Pope John Paul II. The building has a Gothic appearance similar to the original one from the 14th century. It is a three-nave hall with a stellar vault, with a strongly elongated polygonally closed chancel. In years 1982-87 a chapel-mausoleum of Primate Stefan Wyszyński was added. In the vaults of the cathedral there are, among others,. Dukes of Mazovia Janusz I the Elder, Boleslaus III, Stanisław and Janusz III, Archbishops of Warsaw, Primate August Hlond, the writer Henryk Sienkiewicz, the first president of the Second Polish Republic, Gabriel Narutowicz, malarz Marcello Bacciarelli, and also I.. J. Paderewski – politician and musician, gen. Kazimierz Sosnkowski and Ignacy Mościcki – president and chemist, and king Stanisław August Poniatowski. Inside the cathedral there are, among others: the Baryczkowski crucifix, made in the early. XVI w. probably in a Silesian workshop, carved into a pear tree, covered with linen and polychrome, fragment of the marble tombstone of the Dukes of Masovia Stanisław and Janusz III, with the lying figures of the dead, perhaps made by an Italian artist working in Poland in 1 half. XVI w., statue of Stanisław Małachowski – the Marshal of the Great Sejm – made of Carrara marble in St. 1830 r., wg proj. Bertela Thorvaldsena. There are many monuments and memorial plaques in the cathedral: Stefan Starzyński – city president during the defensive war in 1939 r., Wincenty Witos – peasant activist, Roman Dmowski – National Democracy activist, Marshal Józef Piłsudski, Pope John Paul II (on the facade), Cyprian Norwid – the poet, Polish soldiers who died in 1920 r., 1939 r„ 1944 r.
