According to tradition, in pagan times there was a place of religious worship here on a wooded hill. Hence the name of Modlin (initially in the 16th century. sounding Moglno, later Modlno and finally in the 19th century. Modlin). In nearby areas, where at the beginning of the 17th century. there were salt warehouses, at the end of September 1655 r. troops of the mass movement from northern Mazovia under the command of Jan Kazimierz Krasiński were smashed in the fight against the Swedes. In June – july 1656 r. there was a fortified camp of the Swedish army in this area – The belly button, which was of strategic importance for the actions of the Swedes. The strategic importance of the place (the estuary of the Narew to the Vistula) also persisted in the 18th century. The fortress was built on the orders of Napoleon: construction started in 1807 r. according to the plans of French engineers F.. Chasseloup-Laubata i F. Haha. Second Lt.. Ignacy Pradzynski – later known as a general during the Polish-Russian war 1831 r. Then a wooden and earth fortress was built with a semi-oval outline based on the northern part of the city. the banks of the Wista and Narew with 5 bastions. The oldest preserved part of the fortress is the inner perimeter of the citadel consisting of 4 fortification sections and the Kazuń suburb with a bastion outline. The fortress had an important strategic importance as a supply and defense base for the crossing of the Vistula in the triangle of Modlin-Serock-Praga fortresses. W 1808 r. the commander of the fortress was Colonel Cyprian Godebski – poet, hero of the battle of Raszyn. W 1809 r. after the Battle of Raszyn, the main Polish forces under the command of Prince Józef Poniatowski withdrew here and from here began operational activities against the Austrian troops. The fortress was systematically expanded to 1812 r. (brick buttresses, ravelins between the curtains, Gates, caponiery, warehouses, three protruding groups of fortifications with the contours of the crown) withstood the heavy siege of the Russian army from 11 January to 25 November 1813 r. Col. Piotrowski commanded the defense of the fortress at that time, and then gen. De-shares. After 1815 r. the importance of the fortress decreased, m.in. due to the washing of the fortifications in Modlin, Kazuniu and Nowy Dwór by the waters of the Vistula. In years 1822-23 Modlin was the site of the formation of the first battery of Polish rocket launchers, which was organized and commanded by Józef Bem, later general. W 1830 r. the first segment of the optical telegraph was launched (Warsaw— Modlin), which was later extended to St. Petersburg. On the route of approx. 1000 wiorst (1060 km) launched 149 relay stations.
