The main tourist attractions and the most important monuments of Warsaw are located in the city center. Most of them are located along the former Royal Route running from the Royal Castle in the Old Town through the historic streets of Krakowskie Przedmieście, New World, Aleje Ujazdowskie up to the summer residence of the king, the palace in Wilanów. The most beautiful park in Warsaw is also located along this route, Łazienki Królewskie and many great churches, former magnate mansions and historic tenement houses.
Historical events left a lasting mark on the city's architecture. The Second World War particularly hard hit the capital and its inhabitants. Bohaterskie zrywy powstańcze Żydów w Getcie Warszawskim oraz Powstanie Warszawskie w 1944 years led to the destruction of close 80% city area. It was carefully rebuilt after the war.
The city center presents me. in. monuments of socialist realism architecture, headed by the Palace of Culture and Science, which contrasts with modern office buildings and skyscrapers.
